Big Ass Battery is a company founded in 2021 in Helmond, specializing in the development of mobile, sustainable energy storage systems housed in 10-foot shipping containers, based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells. The company positions itself as a pioneer in the energy transition, offering emission-free and silent alternatives to diesel generators for construction site, events, and industrial locations. With a focus on innovation and smart technology, Big Ass Battery develops systems for applications such as grid reinforcement, fast charging, peak shaving, and off-grid energy supply.

More insight into energy management

Big Ass Battery now has dozens of energy storage systems deployed across the country for various applications. As the company grew, the need quickly arose for a clear and scalable monitoring system. The existing setup could no longer keep up with the enormous data traffic and growing complexity. There was a need for an intuitive platform that could collect real-time data, visualize it, and automatically share key insights with stakeholders such as service technicians, customers, and end users.

Online monitoring and management of battery containers

To guarantee the quality, safety, and performance of all systems, we developed an advanced Energy Management System (EMS). This system collects all real-time data from the batteries and displays it in user-friendly dashboards. Not only does the Big Ass Battery team have full control, but customers also gain insight into the performance of their own energy storage systems and their energy usage. This enables them to manage their energy more intelligently  and proactively, significantly improving efficiency and reliability.

The Energy Management System: Smart Ass Energy

In 2025, Big Ass Battery set a new course by shifting its focus from production to software and service, placing the energy management system (EMS) Smart Ass Energy at the core of its future activities.
This transition was driven by the increasing complexity of energy management and the rising need for flexible, scalable, and reliable energy ecosystems at both permanent and temporary sites. To meet this demand, Big Ass Battery chose to offer the EMS as a standalone product called "Smart Ass Energy." This smart system connects various energy sources such as batteries, solar panels, generators, heat pumps, and fast chargers, integrating them into one unified solution.

The smartest EMS in the Netherlands

The aim of the project was to develop a plug-and-play, self-learning system that always guarantees energy reliability, regardless of the energy mix or market conditions, and allows customers to maximize the benefits of their energy infrastructure. The result is a powerful and advanced EMS that can switch between energy sources in under one millisecond. This ensures continuous power supply and replaces traditional UPS systems.
The system is fully plug-and-play. New devices are automatically detected and configured through a user-friendly dashboard, with no need for technicians or software changes. Customers can select different modes (Eco, Max Power, Cost-Efficient), while the system performs real-time optimization based on electricity prices, generation, and consumption. Smart Ass Energy continuously adapts its control strategies to the behavior of different battery and generator brands, maximizing both performance and lifespan. It features functions like peak shaving, load balancing, harmonic filtering, and grid stabilization.

Collaboration between Big Ass Battery and Moonly

Since 2022, Moonly has been the software partner of Big Ass Battery, taking full responsibility for the development, management, and continued evolution of the Smart Ass Energy EMS. In this collaboration, we co-create alongside Big Ass Battery’s innovation team using agile methodology. This strategic partnership enables rapid innovation, the delivery of high-quality software, and future-proofing of the system.
